We tend not to speak about it, but people with a less beautiful appearance are a disadvantaged group in society. Teachers are stricter to ugly pupils, children rather not share their toys with unattractive playmates and we even tend to find ugly babies to be more annoying when they cry. At the same time, we more eagerly listen to good-looking people, they make friends more easily and they have easier access to jobs. Does this unequal treatment qualify as discrimination? Are we turning a blind eye to a serious problem?

We rack our brains on questions of discrimination on the basis of race, gender or sexual preference, but people with an unattractive appearance are discriminated against at least as often. Is ‘lookism’ – discrimination on the basis of attractiveness – morally problematic? And if so, why are we doing so little about it? Listen to Italian philosopher Francesca Minerva on the beauty bias and the need to address the discrimination of ugly, deformed and unattractive people.
